"...U-504 commander Fritz Poske noted in German in his war diary, later translated by historians."
-Eliot Kleinberg, "War in Paradise: Stories of World War II in Florida", page 28

Book does not use footnotes and the sources at the end are pretty broad, not mentioning the war diary by name.

I have been unable to locate such a war diary for Hans-Georg Friedrich "Fritz" Poske. Maybe it was translated, but not published and just held by a historical archive somewhere. Is anyone familiar with it or where I can find the translated version?

U-504 operated off the Florida east coast in early 1942, including sinking SS Republic and SS WD Anderson, the former only 3 1/2 miles from Jupiter Inlet. I'd like to see what he mentions about that time period. I've heard one of the U-boat commanders log or diary mentions the lighthouse at Jupiter and Poske's U-504 seems by far the most likely since it got so close.

I'll check with them - thanks!

    UPDATE:
    They have it: http://uboatarchive.net/KTB504-2.htm

No mention of the Jupiter Lighthouse (they do mention Cape Canaveral's though), but good stuff nevertheless. I'll have to check into other U-boats that were known to be off Jupiter.

    Eureka! U-109, 5th patrol - http://uboatarchive.net/KTB109-5.htm

Mentions passing the lighthouse on 5 May 1942 while trailing a tanker. Also spotted the aircraft warning lights on the radio masts at Station J - presumably with no idea those very radio antennas were listening for him! Never made an attack in the area due to interference from a patrol boat. Reported passing the lighthouse again on May 7.

Once again, Takao comes through with a great naval resource. Fascinating reading, WVJ. As I read the report, it seems the dates where the Jupiter Inlet lighthouse is mentioned are May 7th and May 9th.
