Any idea on the nationality of the ship? If it's a USN vessel it will normally have two or more letters before the numbers although those don't always appear on the hull. I believe a single B was used for a "second class" or essentially obsolete battleship but the numbers on them never got that high. Here's a link to some pictures of the USS Wasmuth DD338:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=ship+DD338&safe=active&biw=1080&bih=1819&noj=1&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=pEIlVbDkN8aosAWn5oAI&ved=0CCsQsAQ
    and her wiki page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wasmuth_(DD-338)
Since she sunk in Dec of 42 she's probably not your vessel of interest.
I'm guessing that the USS SS-338 isn't a likely candidate either.
Turned up two British ships with that hull number (one them like the Carp a sub). Here are their wiki pages:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Strenuous_(J338)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Teredo_(P338)
This google has a link to a rescue tug with that hull number as well, I can't get to the site right now though.

YMS-15 was lent to France in October, 1944. France later bought the YMS-15 on March 21, 1949. However, shortly thereafter, the ship met a tragic end. On June 20, 1949, she struck a mine and sank in the Mekong River wit the loss of 18 crewmen killed or missing.
