What is the most famous single weapon of WWII?

To make it clear:
Tiger = wrong
The Tiger of Michael Wittmann = correct answer

Richthofen's Red Triplane is (only in Germany?) the most famous single weapon of WWI.
And of WWII? Enola Gay?
Any different opinions?

IMO Little Boy rather than Enola Gay, but it's really two aspects of the same thing

I thought Wittman commanded several Tigers? So is this correct or do you need to identify which one?

Regarding the war in Europe - which was over when Little Boy was dropped - the Battleship Bismarck is a contender.

For "Famous weapon" in Europe, I would say Patton's pistol. I think people who are not history buffs probably don't know how Adolf killed himself, or even that he killed himself.

I was bicycle riding next to a young post graduate mechanical enginner two weeks ago and he began talking about electric city buses. I mentioned U boat batteries and he had never heard of a U boat.

 

It can be argued that ships, boats, and planes aren't weapons in and of themselves they just deliver weapons. Thus Fatman and Littleboy rather than Enola Gay or Bockscar. If we got into ships it will almost assuredly be regional as to which is most famous.

 

Well, I'd say the knowledge of Average Joe 6-pack would generally lump Fat Man and Little Boy under one title such as atomic bomb or atom bomb.

To the average GI, almost every shell explosion would come from the dreaded 88.

Ships...That could be several...HMS Hood, KMS Bismarck, USS Arizona, USS Missouri, IJN Yamato

Which one? He carried many over the years and several during WW2.

 

I was just trying to play the average man on the street who might respond to the question. I think such a person who might mention Patton's pistol would be thinking of his SAA Colt .45 with the ivory grips.

 

But the OP specifically requested that it not be "lumped". If it comes to a name that's used a lot "Gadget" could be the answer although most wouldn't realize the reference and arguably it was a test device and not a weapon.

The use of Whittman's tank as an example (all be it a flawed one) would imply that vehicles would count in which case Bismarck or Hood (possibly PoW) may well be the answer. For those interested in the Pacific Missouri, Yamato, and Enterprise would be hard to make the call on.

I imagine the responses to this are mostly regional...eg, one weapon that virtually anyone in my part of the world knows something about is the Spitfire, one pilot everyone knows is Bader....
