My name is Anthony Turner , I am researching my Great Uncle William C Mccarthy (SN 39927420) who was a SGT (date of rank 25 Dec 44) in A Company 117th Infantry Regiment 30th Infantry Division from Oct 44 till Oct 45. I just received his medals from the National Personnel Records Center (his brother, my Grandfather requested them) Silver Star, Purple Heart (03-24-1945), Good Conduct Medal , European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/ 3 bronze star attachments, World War 2 Victory Medal, Combat Infantrymans Badge 1st Award and his Honorable Service Lapel Button WW2 (Ruptured Duck) I still haven't found the General Order # for his Silver Star but the VA and the Government know it was awarded to him. I would like the story but Uncle Bill has been gone since 1999 and I was told not to ask him about his WW2 service. Just happened to find this incredible site while searching. Happy to be here.
Welcome Tony, There are quite a few 30th ID experts on the Forum. If you could post your grandfather's separation paper it might give some clue about the SS and the PH. I'm currently reading about the 117th and the 120th at Mortain France , but this was a little before he was with the 30th.
Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!! I don't have my Great Uncle Bill's separation paper. When I requested his records with form 180 they said the fire had destroyed everything in 1973. The VA might have records. I did get his replacement medals thoiugh He was hit by a bullet in his clavicle on 24 Mar 45 either when crossing the Rhine river or soon after.
How does one go about doing the awesome forum signature honoring our beloved Veterans? I would like to make one for my Great Uncle William C Mccarthy.
Welcome Anthony. Check out this site. I suspect some of these reports may help you along.http://www.oldhickory30th.com/reports.htm As far as the signatures is concerned, they were made by a member who no longer is around. Maybe there are others who can help.
http://www.ww2f.com/topic/13562-requesting-copies-of-military-personnel-records/ Read through the above thread- some alternate ideas for getting his separation paper besides the Archives. Since he was wounded there is a good chance the VA has a lot of his records, including his separation information. The County Court House where he lived when discharged is another good spot-most GI's recorded this important paper.
Welcome to the Forum, Tony. Also, if you know someone who is good with Photoshop or similar software, they may be able to help you make one for your Great Uncle.
