Hello, my name is Ian Lahey, I'm an English literature teacher living in Italy. My dad moved here from the U.S. over thirty years ago. He is not a war veteran but his dad was a U.S. Marine. Living here means I've heard a lot of stories, and seen a lot of places that still carry memories of what happened around '44. I live in Friuli and we sill find shells and grenades, one of which I found myself, in a river next to my school when I was in junior high. Gave the principal quite a shake that time. Thanks for letting me aboard.
Hi Ian. Welcome to the forum. My father served in Italy during the war so I'm always on the lookout for people who live there.
My father went in at Salerno (with the 900th AA) and stayed there until the end of the war. He wound up in Northern Italy. His unit was converted to the 473rd Infantry.
Wow. My dad collected some interviews and such from those areas and organized them in a narrative framework centered around Anzio and Salerno and what happened along the Gustav line in 1944.
