This photo as well as the photo in the other thread (Grandfathers ww2 service questions) were almost certainly taken during or just after basic training. The shoulder sleeve insignia appears to be the basic Army Air Forces patch.

The picture is not clear enough to make out much detail on the pin, but it is probably the DUI (Distinguished Unit Insignia) of their training unit. As training unit insignia, it's a bit more difficult to find info about them.

I know what you mean. I am trying to research the WWII of one of my uncles with just a few bits of info. I have found that, especially with small towns, the local newspaper archives can be helpful. They often will run stories on local servicemen or publish their mailing address which almost always includes the name of their unit. However, the newspapers can sometimes be inaccurate so it's a good idea to find other sources as confirmation.

Try the newspapers for 1943-45 or whatever timeframe makes sense. They would likely be at the library or local historical society. As I said, if they published his mailing address, it should include the unit he was in, not just the city & state.

The picture on the other thread is mirror image also-patch and badge should be on the left.
I see this a lot and don't have the faintest idea why.
