I was just about to re-read the battle of the Bulge section of my book Against the Panzers....I saw near the inside cover the autographs and very brief notes of some WW2 vets I had asked to sign it at a Veteran's Parade long ago....I never really noticed what appears to be Stewart Piper's autograph and that he was at Wiltz, and the Bulge,...it gave me a small, but real, connection to that time, which began today...I did a quick search and see the 26th near Wiltz at that time ....I value this brief note from a vet, as much as any memorabilia as it is December 16, I'd like to salute to Piper, and all those who served on both sides....hungry, always very cold, sometimes afraid and in fear.......but they carried on with their duties.....a lot of time on guard duty in the cold...or moving to another position...or moving supplies......waiting, then waiting some more.....and dreading.....dreading and waiting,--- for the unknown
