I found this forum while looking for information on WW2 artifacts that my grandmother had. I have had always had a deep fascination with WW2, especially with the war in the Pacific and the Western Front in Europe. I served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years. I hope to learn a lot from this place!
welcome ...I spent 4 years in and out of Camp Lejuene and had the unexpected ''pleasure'' of coming close to one of your genial native creatures--an alligator !! I didn't even know they were in NC...we spent hours going through the swamps and no one told me about them !! .....really, I loved NC..... were you on ships and if so , which ones, if I may ask? I was on LSTs, LPH, LHA what artifacts? can you post pictures? thanks
Oh yes, plenty of Alligators along coastal NC! I was on a DDG out of NS Norfolk. As for artifacts, we are still researching most of it but the one in particular that I was looking for on here, was an Imperial Japanese Admiral Flag. Here is what I posted om the militaria thread. I can't find much on them, so anyone with any knowledge, would be greatly appreciated: I came across this flag while searching through my Grandmothers possessions that she left my mother, when she died. Her father served in the war, in both the Pacific and European theaters. After some research, I am confident it is an INJ rear admiral flag. This is an article I found: ZFC0951 Imperial Japanese Navy Rear Admiral Flag, 1889 to 1945. The Imperial Japanese Navy (INJ) promoted 53 officers (14 of them posthumously) to the grade of rear admiral, the most junior admiral in the INJ. The rear admiral’s flag was similar to an admiral’s of superior rank, except that it displayed a red stripe at both the top and bottom edges of the flag. Because of their relative scarcity, American sailors prized flags like this as they boarded surrendered INJ ships. Given the almost total destruction of the INJ during the war, few admirals’ flags have survived. https://www.flagcollection.com/resourcesstaticcontent.php?CollectionHTMLZone_Code=resources_heart_ww2 Here is our flag. Any help or knowledge that you guys could pass, would be outstanding.
Welcome. You've come to the right place for information. I'm sure someone will be along to satisfy your curiosity.
