i don't know but i have a liking for the 1903 springfield, used by american soldiers as a battle rifle as late as 1943, and as a sniping weapon in korea and early during the vietnam war. that's 4 major wars it saw service. probably surpassed only by the AK-47 and 1911 .45 in longevity of service. the 1903A3 (ca. WWII) was the very best version.

I always liked German MP40 also known as Schmeisser. Mostly because of it's look.

I personally prefer the M1 Garnad as a rifle man. The M1903A4 I think is the best sniper rifle. (I know I might seem bias towards American weapons, but I think for a rifle man a semi auto rifle is the best and many call the M1903A4 the most accurate sniper rifle during the war).

For me these are by far the Best!
Handguns - Browning HP! NO 2nd choice!
    Rifles - Garand, K 43, SVT 40 I hunt deer (& cyotes) with a K 43
SMGs - MP 40, PPSh, Thompson
    Mkbs - MP 43 series
MGs - MG 42! NO 2nd choice! I have a 7.62 Nato bbl in mine as ammo is cheaper.

I have owned and shot all of these except the PPSh, which I have shot, but so far don't own one.
I carried a BHP in Viet Nam, you couldn't give me a 45!

Best or favourite? That's a difference.
    My favourites:
SMLE - holds 10 rounds, a lot of wood
ZB 26 - reliable, understated, can be operated by a single soldier
Ppsh 41 - works in cold and muddy russia, huge magazine, a lot of wood for a SMG.

FG 42 was the best small arm of all, but more an experimental weapon with no impact on the outgoing of the war.

Rifle: Garand by far. Best sights, reliable, with acceptable accuracy. Only downside is the stupid loading system.

Pistol: Walther P-38. A much better design than the Colt! There, I said it!

MG: MG-42, but with the post-war design where you can change buffers in order to control the rate of fire.

Sniper's Rifle/system: Probably Lee-Enfield, K-98 and, last, but not by much, the Mosin-Nagant.

Overall: The StG 44-a real game changer!
