Galician Division members living in Britain?

Yeah, saw that in one of our papers. Think they were in camps in Scotland, then a lot of them settled here.

 

SS Galizien wasn't any Adolf Hitler’s elite paramilitary unit, their training was sub-par, their food, uniforms were worse. They weren't considered equals with Germans.
They didn't fight for Hitler but for their own free Ukraine.

They last commander, Pavlo Shandruk, was a Polish war hero of the September 1939 war, and was decorated for this with the highest Polish military order.

When in 1945 the British wanted to deport Pavlo Shandruk and the remnants of his soldiers to the USSR for certain death, he asked his former colleagues in the Polish Army for help and received it.
They were declared Polish citizens (actually they were Polish citizens as most of them lived in pre-war Poland) - as Polish citizens they could be deported.

Those people living in Britain are actually those Ukrainians saved by the Poles.

I dedicate this story to Tamino and his claims the Poles wanted ethnically cleanse all their ethnic minorities...

Thank you wm. I figured this was sensationalized, but needed to know for sure. Also, that "elite" tag gets thrown around so much by journalists as to make it null.

 

Especially 70 years after the fact.
