    Killer Whales Near Vancouver

Taken from Galiano Island. For those who don't live here, the Island is on

one side of Active Pass, and you'll see the BC ferries passing each other.
The orcas don't seem bothered by the ferries, including the baby born

earlier this year. Enjoy the show!

Love those big, toothy critters! In the Spring and fall a traveling pod comes through Kodiak to feast on the Stellar Sea Lions that live in the harbor. I shot this footage in 2009.

Should we be using such negative language.......

    Perhaps Pacifist Challenged Whales? :)

I saw footage of them separating a grey calf from his mother, taking turns holding him underwater until he drowned, then eating his tongue and leaving the rest. They are killers, clever, powerful, and ruthless.

They're not cruel. They're just picky eaters.

ive seen them play with their quarry before eating it....killing but NOT eating...and slow killing methods...just smart enough to be cruel...we all know some humans like that, they need euthanasing too...

A couple of day ago I was watching a Sea Lion hunted by a small pack of Orca...he was big and old, and experienced...he dove deep and sat on the bottom, he KNEW they used echo location and decided to act like a rock on the bottom, peering up at his attackers with a "you dumb asses" look on his face...The Orca finally moved down the inlet and the Sea lion slowly surfaced, took a breath and had a good look around...then made his way quietly out of the inlet, keeping the bank only a couple of meters away the whole time...ready to get on land at any moment...Love those stories...

Most predators 'play' with their quarry before eating, or often begin eating while the prey is immobilized but still alive. Nature is cruel and orcas are no different than any other predator.

Guess we need to ".50 cal to death" Fluffy the house cat also. They are notorious for playing with their quarry, killing but not eating...

Bears and wolves are notorious for eating their prey while it's still alive. Bears will also waste a lot of meat; in winter in Kodiak deer tend to group up on the beaches to get out of the deep snow and bears will run through and take down a dozen (no, not all bears hibernate in winter) even though they can only eat one or two before high tide cleans the beach. A rancher I knew lost 7 cattle in 7 nights to a bear who only ate the entrails and left the meat behind.

Brown bears will also kill cubs of their own species, just because...

At any rate, it's a Disney fantasy that nature isn't wasteful or cruel. It's both.

African painted dogs start eating their prey while it's still alive because they usually hit prey that's too big for them to kill outright, so they disembowel it.

Brow bear males normally kill cubs because they're someone else's offspring or considered to be a threat to the bear's territory, AND the female will be in heat again sooner.

Same with the noble savage idea. First Nations used to run whole herds of bison off cliffs and then preserve the best parts from each animal. I've read oral histories passed down about the men having to drive off hordes of scavenging opportunistic animals each morning before they resumed work on the meat collection.

That's just a human interpretation to justify the behavior. In fact, I watched and filmed brown bears for many years and they'll kill anything they can catch just for kicks. I once watched one flatten a fox for no reason at all. It didn't eat it. They'll knock down seagulls for kicks. And they'll kill cubs for the same non-reason. It's all fun and games to them.

This one below was just playing around. He dives on salmon, he chases after gulls and at several points starts to make a bluff charge on me. I avert my gaze (note the camera dipping or swinging to the side) and hold my ground, so he loses interest. If I'd run like a (cub or a gull or a fox), he'd have given chase and killed me for kicks.

Animals can be very smart, but they don't have empathy like a human. They eat and they breed and, sometimes, just like to have fun. Sometimes that fun is killing something.

I am turning all you guys into Otto's Human Resources Department, assuming he has one ! Insensitive language . I grew up on a farm, surprising they are not the warm fuzzy places pictured in the city folk's eyes. I use to fed piglets then we would slaughterr one and eat it, that did get to me.

Orca's playing are beautiful, eating not so :)
