I'm starting this thread about WW2-related trivia. Feel free to join in and add a little known or cared about off the wall fact. I'll get it started.

Chicago Midway International Airport was renamed from Chicago Municipal Airport in 1949. The "Midway" part was in honor of the Battle of Midway.

One of the oldest warships at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941, was USS Baltimore, CA-3.

The original abbreviation of the National Socialist Party was Nasos. The word “Nazi” derives from a Bavarian word that means “simple minded” and was first used as a term of derision by journalist Konrad Heiden (1901-1966).[2]

US tried to purchase Chilean battleship after Pearl Harbor

Almirante Latorre was never fully modernized, however, and by the Second World War her main battery was comparatively short-ranged and her armor protection, designed before the "all or nothing" principle was put into practice, was wholly inadequate.[48] Nevertheless, soon after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States approached the Chilean naval attaché and the vice admiral heading Chile's naval commission to the United States with the aim of purchasing Almirante Latorre and a few destroyers to bolster the United States' navy. The offer was declined,[32][49] and Almirante Latorre was used for neutrality patrols during the Second World War.[18]

There were no more neutrality patrols after the US entered the war.

In 1942, American DJs were forbidden to accept listener requests as it was feared that enemy agents could pass on information that way.

A janitor at the Air Force Academy was a combat infantryman and Medal of Honor recipient in WW2. After retiring from the Army as a Master Sergeant, William Crawford cleaned the barracks as a humble and shy janitor, and never let on to his experiences in the Italian Campaign. He was later captured and presumed KIA, so his award was given to his father. After the war, he was found in a POW camp, unaware of the fact that he was awarded the MoH. Some Air Force cadets learned of his "other life" and things took off then. Read on.
