I'm starting this thread about WW2-related trivia. Feel free to join in and add a little known or cared about off the wall fact. I'll get it started. Chicago Midway International Airport was renamed from Chicago Municipal Airport in 1949. The "Midway" part was in honor of the Battle of Midway.

A janitor at the Air Force Academy was a combat infantryman and Medal of Honor recipient in WW2. After retiring from the Army as a Master Sergeant, William Crawford cleaned the barracks as a humble and shy janitor, and never let on to his experiences in the Italian Campaign. He was later captured and presumed KIA, so his award was given to his father. After the war, he was found in a POW camp, unaware of the fact that he was awarded the MoH. Some Air Force cadets learned of his "other life" and things took off then. The other Chicago airport O'Hare is name for MOH winner and Navy fighter ace Edward"Butch" O'Hare.The field was originally called Orchard Field,hence the designation ORD.
