    Hello,

I hope someone can help me with finding a British soldier. When the war was over in Holland, my grandads father received a coat and a 1 gulden paper from this soldier with his name and numbers. Many years later my grandad would like to give the coat and '1 gulden' back to him or his family.
On regular sites i can't find nothing with his name or number so i hope someone here can help us a little bit further. Excuses for the bad English.

    Name soldier : Lomas
    Number : 7879696
    5in R.I.D.G B.L.A
    March 1945

There are 2 other names on it but its difficult to read after all those years. View attachment 25039

Number shows he originally enlisted into the RTR.
    Royal Tank Regiment 7868001 - 7891868

5 RIDG = 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards

Might be worth contacting the Tank Museum.

You will very likely find him and his family on thegenealogost.co.uk by typing in Lomas as the surname with an approximate date of birth of 1925, plus or minus 5 years, he will be there somewhere if born in England. The problem is finding him from all of the names you get..... It will give you many matches but also can give you military records which may help to narrow it down....but...you have to pay for a full subscription for the military records.
Just looking at births between 1920 and 1930 we get females as well as males. Once the females and those who died are taken out you can probably say that your man is there somewhere, if not you may need to do a plus or minus 5 years on the year 1920 looking at a birth of around 1915. The first page looks like below but also may include those who have died; You need to go through all of the pages, look at them and think, "he's in there somewhere" and work from there. It's not guaranteed but a good way to start..good luck. My email is focusing22@yahoo.co.uk let me know if I can help in any way, I know how you feel.

Hav eyou tried tracking him down via the Skins? The RTR was a big organisation, with many regiments wearing the cap badge, There was only one battalion sized unit in the Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. It was a family regiment which has strong connections to the old boys. Try contacting the Royal Dragoon Guards Association, or their Old comrades. http://www.rdgmuseum.org.uk/

Or posting on WW2 talk the sister website to this forum dedicated to the British and Commonwealth forces. http://www.ww2talk.com/index.php?forums/searching-for-someone-military-genealogy.13/

Looks like C. F. Lomas to me. There's a Charles F. Lomas born 1921, on the 1939 Identification Register at findmypast in the Salford, Lancashire region of England. I wouldn't waste money viewing the record as this may not be him. Need more info to verify. Can't see any family trees on Ancestry with a Charles F. Lomas. Ran both those service numbers through the Casualty Lists but neither returned as wounded or deceased.
