The house in Austria where Adolf Hitler was born is set to be demolished to stop it becoming a focal point for neo-Nazis. Austrians are keen to get rid of Austrian Adolf Hitler and are addopting German Wolfgang Mozart.

Shame! Hitler's bunker destroyed, the Führerkanzlei, demolished, Berghoff, erradicated... Without physical evidence, someone in the future might claim that everything is conspiracy, a myth created by evil forces.

Wouldn't it be better to show place to the future generation: "Here is where the bastard was born."

    The neo-Nazi shrine:

If that's the real reason for the house to be demolished then Austria should reconsider their past, present and the future. Destroying history whether good or bad because of some group of people is shameful. Lock 'em idiots up. That's the way to solve the problem.

What a shameful destruction of history. It would have been best to turn it into a museum that could have educated the public about this dark period of history. Speaking with associates who are involved with European museums, I hear many say that neo-Nazis will avoid museums or sites that include extensive holocaust references -- even those located on grounds connected directly to the NSDAP or SS. The "Documentation Center" on the Obersalzberg comes to mind. Upon my last visit 2 years ago I was told that there were "extremely few" neo Nazis who visited the site (even though visitors can access the tunnel/bunker system once used by members of the Nazi elite), and the number of such scum visiting the area in fact "significantly decreased" after the museum was opened. I can't vouch for the credibility of that statement but it seems logical for several diverse reasons. How many neo-Nazis visit the preserved concentration camps?

It is wrong to say that all those who visit the Hitler house are there as part of a "neo Nazi pilgrimage". There is legitimate history interest and significance in the site. I've been to the Obersalzberg several times, and I'm there primarily for the historical significance -- not just the fantastic alpine landscape. Does this make me a neo Nazi? Evidently some would say "Yes". This section from the BBC article is an example of this:

Did Mr. Kogler ever consider that the French history teacher may have been there out of historical interest?

I've been planning on viewing the house for many years now and it is not because I'm a neo Nazi. Does anyone know when the targeted demolition date is?

I must also say that I'm not convinced that this is the best route. History is history good or bad. To erase it is to forget, to forget is to repeat....

I agree completely. I consider myself a student of history and find the rise and fall of the NSDAP fascinating, horrific and tremendously important. I have never been to the Obersalzberg or Berchtasgaden (couldn't make it as the winter was terrible that year) but find the trip a worthwhile historical trek. It's absolutely ludicrous that people would consider visitors as Neo-Nazis because they are intrigued by the history. I think this stems from people not understanding the difference. A Neo-Nazi would go for adoration. Others go there for education.

Come on guys...this is his house, a curio...I doubt the destruction of his boyhood home will erase ANYTHING from history...there are countless movies and documentaries (that no doubt include film of his house) that will make sure no one forgets. Any morbid fascination will have to go unquenched.

If you are referring to the Neo Nazis yes. Historians going there for historical reasons no.

I disagree. The house belongs to history. Films and documentaries are fine, but the issue is not one of forgetting but of preserving. Too many buildings, houses, etc. have been erased from our consideration leaving only a plaque. That's a shame.

That's life...we need to learn from our past not revere it as something special. Too many heritage buildings here that look crap, and no one can demolish and build, even if its in the middle of town,,.,I can see how people want to preserve maybe a one off building, but buildings in general have a life span and (due to our ridiculous insistence to keep breading) we need more space to house the new people coming into the system. We are running out of the luxury to be sentimental. This bloke was a mass murderer who had significant mental problems, who gives a stuff where he grew up? (Maybe interesting if the location had something to do with his consequent actions, but this didn't)...its a house/apartment like any other.

Unfortunately, this man turned the world upside down and was evil incarnate. The course of history was altered dramatically and became the most tragic drama in history. I agree, it's a crap little flat that really should have no historical value. But...it does. Objects from history force one not to forget.

That's foolish reason, if you ask me. It's in the same spirit as burning certain books because they can incite rebellion.

He, he, this is a good one. On May 7, 1945 two US soldiers immortalized themselves on the walls of a room where Hitler was born.

PS: This is an interesting story:

PATERSON NATIVE SIGNED `DEATH WARRANT' ON WALL OF HITLER HOME

    It wasn't graffiti.

"We decided," remembered Jerry Siccardi, "let's put our name on the
wall. We wanted it to be like we were signing his death warrant. No, it
wasn't graffiti, it was his death warrant."
