I thought these were pretty good http://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/the-navy-made-these-incredible-photos-to-show-present-day-pearl-harbor-compared-to-the-day-of-the-attack
Link doesn't work for me, I'll check again in the AM. (Goes to page, page doesn't load.) Admin - I added the pics to the original post.
For some reason, the 5th photo made me wonder what the young sailor in the photo was thinking as he watched destruction in the harbor. Shock, dismay, disbelief, anger.
Nice photos Jeff. Does anyone know what machine gun that is in the 4th photo down? I don't recall having seen that flash hider (?) before.
Probably all that and a bit stunned. That's the Arizona in the background and they were close enough to feel the blast from the original explosion.
I think you mean Nevada. She passed between the seaplane base and the exploding USS Shaw on her "sortie." From other angles, roughly the same time.
Yep, that one picture shows the Shaw in the floating dry dock when her onboard ammo went off. In the '70s I helped offload a butt load of 5" rounds before our DLG went into the yards because of that explosion. I imagine they still do this. The picture with the two sailors, one seated, one standing next to him, was, IIRC, taken on Ford Island, looking NNE at the Arizona.
That's what I have been trying to tell you...You recall incorrectly. The original photo is taken at the seaplane base located at the southern end of Ford Island - The Arizona was on the northern end. In the present day photo surrounding it - The Pacific Warfighting Center(located at the southern end of Ford Island, where the old seaplane base was) is clearly visible https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pacific+Warfighting+Center/@21.3565928,-157.9664968,609m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xf10832e9c7ff1d6d!8m2!3d21.3566716!4d-157.9636379 Further, the battleship's boat cranes are facing aft...The Arizona's were facing forward. Finally, the battleship's machinegun platform on the foremast is even with the searchlight platform on the mainmast. If the battleship in question was truly the Arizona, the machinegun platform on the foremast would be one level higher.
