With all the aggressive foreign policy that led to the appeasement of the late 1930s, Germany became somewhat of a black sheep of diplomacy. Then, the original black sheep of the time period, Soviet Russia, agreed to a pact with Nazi Germany, which all of the West shunned and considered "unnatural." In the eyes of the Western powers, it lumped Russia in with Germany. Now we all know about Hitler's demands, they eventually drifted to Danzig, with him wanting the Danzig corridor back into the German Reich. This is where common ground could have lead Germany and Poland to an agreement, because Poland hated Russia and Communism just as much as Hitler, and the Western powers disliked Communism just as much. Playing economic blocs off each other, such as Nazism and Soviet Communism, or the Cold War, is desirable for the power structures of said blocs.

If Poland and Germany reached an agreement over Danzig whereby they didn't fight, and they cooperated much like they did with Russia on certain things, and German troops were allowed in to Poland, and Germany eventually attacked Russia without Poland getting involved, would the Western powers have still declared war on Germany, or since it was Communist Russia and they made the pact with Germany to begin with, and the Western power structure hated Communism, would they have left those two to fight themselves out and not get involved?

I doubt the Western powers would have actively chose sides, seeing as they were both oppressive authoritarian regimes with aggressive foreign policy aims. I could see The West selling arms to them though. The Corporate Fascists on Wall Street did plenty to help build up Germany, I'm sure they would have lent arms to help defeat communism which was the real enemy.

This would have been impossible in my opinion. A few thoughts :

    1) Hitler did not wat Danzig alone, but all the pre Versailles territorties taken from German and granted to Poland (poznam, parts of Eastern silezia, Bromberg etc..... In other the entire Polish coastline, the Silezian mines and much more. Poland would not have been able to survive without those economicla and strategic assetts.

    2) Why would Poland trust Hitler more than Staline?

    3) Hitler needed to be able to dash through Poland from west to east without having to ask for permission.

    4) Hitler needed the crummies of Southern Poland territories to feed some eastern European powers .

    5) Granting eastern poland to Staline allowed the Pact with the Soviets that allowed Hitler to attack the west.

6)Poland had an outdated army and would not have been a strong ally

    7) Having Poland in its back between Berlin and Moskau woud have been a danger for the Germans in case Poland chose to swith sides with a regular army .

Not necessarily an ally, just to allow troop movements and a certain cooperation. Poland was anti-Russian and anti-communist. The USSR tried many times to bring Poland in and it failed. If Germany and Poland could have reached some kind of understanding, allowing a common border to be had for Germany and Poland. Germany tried to form a treaty with Poland to no avail.

The Western powers hated Communism and wanted it destroyed, which is why so quickly after World War II we pretty much turned on the Russians and were suspicious of them and started the roots of the Cold War before the war was even over. The CIA was full of Nazis as was the Sciences so quickly after the war.

Ok, Poland and Nazi-Germany are allies, and then? They declare war on the Soviet Union and...loose. They then became a satellite of the Soviet Union in the best case. When the new allies win, Poland becomes a satellite of Germany. Poland wasn't Switzerland with Italy and France supporting it.

France and Britain were the only great military powers which were interested in an independent Poland. And in the end, they did choose the right partners. No one could forsee in 1939 that Stalin becomes a part of the Anti-Hitler-coalition and defeating Germany will be a hollow victory for Poland.

What I'm saying is Poland signs a non-aggression pact similar to the pact Germany had with the USSR, allowing troop movements, trading, friendly terms etc. Eventually, Germany does what it always wanted, invade Russia and crush Communism with or without Poland. Since Germany and Russia had the pact that the Western Allies shunned, would they remain neutral if those two powers fought?
