Need TO&E for heavy armored division.

Is there an available online source that has the TO&E for either the 2nd or 3rd Armored Division after all the changes; like in 1944? Thanks

 

No there isn't. I have one, but it is just the March 1942 TO&E with theater authorized modifications. Both divisions retained their 37mm AT guns and in some cases they were mounted on halftracks, but for the most part they replaced them one-for-one with the 57mm AT gun. Otherwise, the divisions were authorized the M4 105mm in August, initially IIRC 18 for the 2d AD and 24 for the 3d (why the difference I have never discovered), but later changed to 27, confirmed around 28 November. The divisions were also authorized 12 dozer blades and 37 ARV.

I'm trying to learn 1) how many light tanks were allotted to each of the light tank companies in each battalion?
I believe in 1942 the heavy Armored Regiment was made up of one battalion of light tanks and two battalions of mediums.
They finally decided that each of the three battalions in the regiment would have one company of lights and two companies of mediums.

2) I know there were half-tracks assigned to the divisions, but how were they assigned? Were they used primarily for reconnaissance?

All tank companies in the 1942 Armored Division were 17 tanks. The Armor Regiment consisted of 1st Battalion (A, B, C Company) with light tanks and 2d Battalion (D, E, F Company) and 3d Battalion (G, H, I Company) with medium tanks. However, before D-Day both 2d and 3d AD created mixed battalions by cross-attaching companies between the battalions so each battalion consisted of one light and two medium tank companies.

Half tracks were used by the Armored Infantry as APC's as well as in various other special uses.

 

Thanks again Rich. I was guessing between 15 and 20 considering the number of men in a company.

 

• I think it was 5 per platoon with 2 more for the Company commander and his XO. Rich can probably confirm or refute that off the top of his head.

Those are the organizations for the Medium and Light tank companies of the September 1943 Tank Battalion of the 1943 Armored Division and Separate battalions, not for the tank regiment/battalion/company of the March 1942 Armored Division

 

If you can put your hands on a copy of Stanton's WW2 Order of Battle, all your questions will be answered there. It's a good reference book to have around in general too.

 

While Stanton is very good, he does not give the full TO&E personnel and equipment schedule for the 1942 Armored Division, which is what was requested.
