Hey guys my user name is DaveOB and I'm from Tampa. First I want to say thank you to the posters on the ww2 forum especially the ones who make a great effort to keep it's accuracy as high as possible. This is a very valuable resource, that I've read for years, because it is often the only place to find certain kinds of information on the internet. I've posted a couple of times very rudely without introducing myself lol. I've been interested in ww2 since I was a kid and I'm 45 now. I'm also very interested in air combat and I've read every book, every internet article / video that I'm aware exists on fighter combat tactics and maneuvers including the Robert Shaw book by that name which is the bible. I have thousands if not tens of thousands of simulator hours and kills. Lately however it's been tanks and infantry. Mostly the experiences and the stories of the men and units involved. I'm also interested in the tactics and strategies. I don't like war but I've always been fascinated with the art of war (read that too) but have never been in the military, although my family is a military family (I was raised at Hurlburt Field). Anywho enough about me. Just wanted to introduce myself. I've read so many of the posts on the forum from internet searches that I felt like I might as well join in the fun.
G'day Dave...Tampa not unlike Darwin weather wise? Florida doesn't reach down to the tropics does it? Im 45 and have very similar interests as yourself...if your into tanks I wold recommend "World of Tanks" as a great starting point (The makers even go so far as source real life versions of these tanks so they can record their engine and track sounds, so its pretty lifelike...) and all tank strategies apply also to the game. I was playing last night and found myself alone with 5 tanks hunting me through a burnt out town...they soon realised I was in a Russian KV-1...they hit me 45 times with their pee shooters and I slowly despatched all 5 to win the game...THIS is fun. I play on my Ipad. Anyway, welcome aboard, please post more.
Good to have you aboard Dave. I'm also a Dave and about as far fromTampa in the lower 48 as possible- north of Seattle.
Thanks KJ! Yes CAC it's pretty tropical here, lizards everywhere and grasshoppers and roaches the size of mice. Aside from that though it's pretty much like paradise. It's the tourist/ retirement/ golf/ sport fishing capital of the US if not the world. But if your looking for a Broadway play or an opera forget it. Luckily that's not my thing. We also have some of the best aviation museums in the world. I don't play alot of video games anymore but I have played world of tanks, it's fun, KV 1 is OP as they say lol.
Wow...Tampa sounds scarily like Darwin...we should be sister cities...I know you get the storms too...
Ya one year we had 4 hurricanes blow through Tampa ('99?) Surprisingly not a lot of damage to the city that year although some of the surrounding areas like Orlando and Sarasota got plastered.
Yes One A Day (TM) vitamins are the State fruit here in Florida lol (many retirees). So One A Day (TM) in Tampa Bay is very appropriate!
Ya Slipdigit I know what your referring to. Its very ingrained in the local aviation lore. They still refer to it in the news whenever there's an accident at Macdill
Hi Dave. Glad you could join us. There are plenty of posts that address both of your interests. There are arguments for and against almost anything you can imagine. Read and enjoy. Post your own thoughts as well. Feel free to weigh in!
But it wasn't just the b-26. Being a major training area for pilots during the war ALOT of pilots died in Tampa and around Florida during the war. It's one of the reasons the Bermuda triangle got its reputation.
