Recently on the history channel they showed how the Russians used gun oil when the temperature was 40 below zero

in the battle for Stalingrad. They said the Russians mixed gasoline with gun oil to lubricate their rifles. They showed a

demonstration with 40 below zero simulated. The use of regular gun oil caused problems with the rifles firing mechanism.

The rifles with mixed gun oil and gasoline worked faster and more reliable.

Also the Russians came up with something like our k rations and distributed them to the Russian troops in Stalingrad.
