US Navy Uniform

I wonder if someone can help me with the attached pictures. I understand that this (late) relative of mine was in the US Navy and was an ensign. Does the uniform give any clue as to what department/section of the Navy he was in, or even, if he was on a ship, which ship he might have been on. I think the photos date from 1944/45 , may have been taken at his wedding and might have been taken in the States, although I believe he did visit this country near the end of the war.

The uniform is standard USN issue, and it doesn't denote any MOS in particular. On the picture with your relative is in his whites, on his shoulder board there's a small design above the solid bar indicating his rank of ensign. I can't make out what the design is, but I'm sure someone else with better eyes and better knowledge of USN MOS's will be able to help us.

They have a great collection of US Navy records, muster rolls, after action reports, etc. I don't use it enough to get an annual membership so I just get a monthly whenever I need something.

 

Looking at his shoulderboard on his white works & the sleeve of his blues, I don't think he's a line officer . . . maybe supply corps.

 

It looks like an anchor to me. What MOS would that be in WW2?

 

Anchor...Midshipman, First Class.

 

With the solid ensign bar on the shoulder board?

 

IIRC, it would be "Staff Corp" officers.

and single anchor on the shoulder board.

Except, the anchor should be higher(the middle of the board) than in the photo.

Have just found another photo. Does this one give any more clues? I think it was taken a few years after the last couple a posted, on a visit to the UK.

Unfortunately, USN officers' uniforms are pretty nondescript. As you are finding out.

Look for photos of him aboard a ship, or other vessel. Or scenic photos he might have taken during his time in the navy.

But, as has been mentioned earlier, your best bet would be to go with Fold3, and search for his name.

 

Appreciate the help. I'm not much on Navy uniforms as y'all can see, especially the line of work (MOS equivalent) assignments. I knew that the star on the shoulder board and sleeve indicated a line officer (command), and other inscriptions indicated other jobs, but that's about it.
