"Submariners who died in the sinking of HMS K13 during the First World War are to be honoured 100 years on.

The steam-propelled submarine sank in Gare Loch, Argyll, on January 29, 1917, as a result of seawater entering the engine room during sea trials.

The disaster claimed 32 lives, including all the men in the engine room.

A special service will be held on Sunday at Faslane Cemetery, Garelochhead, to commemorate the victims, organised by the veteran Submariners Association.

There were 80 men in total on board on the day of the sinking, including 53 crew, 14 employees of a Govan shipbuilder, five Admiralty officials, a pilot and the captain and engineer of sister submarine K14.

The survivors were trapped in the submarine's forward section for 57 hours until an air line was attached to enable the vessel to bring her bow to the surface.

A hole was cut in the side of the submarine, allowing the 48 survivors to be rescued.

HMS K13 was raised from Gare Loch in March 1917 and all those who died were then buried in Faslane Cemetery.

The submarine later returned to service as HMS K22."
