A visit to Dresden

While on my to Poland I spent some time in the city of Dresden . I visited the famous Frauenkirch, some historical buildings that have survived the 1945 bombing and the city museum. I have no pictures of the inside of the cathedral (Verboten ...) but those are easy to find on Google anyway. NO POLITICAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE BOMBING HERE PLEASE. THERE ARE OTHER THREADS FOR THAT. This is to enjoy the beauty of the city and its past and present glory.




A typical historical preseved villa (Hotel) that was preserved because it it 6km away fro mthe center.



A building that is being restored because due to lack of maintenance during the DDR area. Those large villas were not fashionable those days and many were abandonned. The following an previous villas are in the same street.

 

Crossing the Elbe river into the hstorical center . The building have almost all been destroyed and rebuilt with skill. from a distance they really look old.

 

The brand new Frauenkirch that was rebuilt after 60 years . It took so long to get the money and the skills to restore it. It looks brand new. and the mediaval cachet is certainly lacking, but the Germans did a woderful job.

Many thanks for sharing with us, Skipper - I have never been to Dresden....

 

A very easy access from west to east. There is an autobahn all the way and Idrove via Saarbrücken, Frankfurt am Main and Erfurt. The people are very nice and helpful to tourists.

I have, just once, back in February 1992 (25 years ago now, makes me feel old) but it was to change trains on the way from Hannover to Prague so I never saw anything else apart from the railway station and it was dark , middle of the night.


Interesting photos Skipper, my Mum & Dad went there years ago & saw the rebuilt church, they saw more than I did.

 

The museum has also preserved a huge exploded shell of an RAF bomb .
