On #8 I found 240mm Nuclear Artillery "Atomic Annie". I know it was not in the built until the 50´s but I guess it is the biggest US cannon.

the biggest cannon would be the 155mm 'Long Toms' wouldnt it?

 

Hell now, I believe the Russians were using something like 300mm in Berlin, to destroy those three foritied towers they had.

 

The russians had a tracked 203mm howitzer...

What about those big German guns, Karl and Bertha etc?

 

The Karl Mortars had a caliber of 60cm and 54cm.

The huge German railway gun- Dora or Gustav- had a caliber of 80cm.

The "Little David" cannon- orignally designed by the US army to test aircraft bombs- had a caliber of 914mm.



However, Little David was never used in action. But since the question said "american artillery piece", the Little David would win.

The most appropriate "Biggest Gun" answer is the Dora/Gustav- mainly because it was the biggest gun ever used in action.

The Karl Mortars were easily the biggest self-propelled guns ever used.

Why do I get the idea that this "quiz" will not be graded?

It must be the "Little David"! I only found a couple of foreign sites about the name. Funny that there´s not much written about it?

 

I would bet that there is little info for it because it was never used in action. Never made it out of the testing phases.

From what I've read, considering the relatively short range and the time/effort needed to emplace the weapon, it probably would not have been all that effective an offensive weapon anyway. Maybe as part of a defensive system, but even then...

 

914mm ? ! holy dog poop batman ! wow, can see this thing being used as a testpiece in arizona where it had plenty of room for it's big bang.

The German pieces were hard to conceal and performed well on the Ost front as long as the camo net and caves were in place....

I get the idea that the Germans were VERY good at cponcealing their artillery in some cases...

One of the more interesting aspects of the story of "Anzio Annie"- the K5 Railroad gun now seen at Aberdeen Proving Grounds- is that the allied air forces never found it! Throughout the Anzio beachhead, Anzio Annie pounded the allied positions. And yet the gun was captured in perfect condition, because allied aircraft had never found and attacked the gun.

Obviously, as Erich mentions, despite the massive size of some of these guns, they actually could be hidden from the enemy!
