Now I'll add some lyrics of other songs: "No more Soldiering For Me" (Sung to the tune of "What a Friend we have in Jesus") "Kiss me goodnight, Sergeant Major" "Sod 'Em All" To the tune of "Bless 'Em All" "Hitler Has Only Got One Ball" (Sung to the tune of "Colonel Bogey") (Now I know where do the myths about Hitler's one ball and Goebbel's homosexuality come from... ) "Deutscher, Deutscher" (Sung to the tune of the German National Anthem) "You Take the Gun" (Sung to the tune of "Loch Lomond")
Freddy you also have 'Lillie Marlene' used by the Germans, the British and the Americans in the Med. Some alternate British lyrics: We're the D-Day Dodgers, way off in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree; Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks, We live in Rome, among the Yanks. We are the D-Day Dodgers, way out in Italy;(2X) We landed in Salerno, a holiday with pay, The Jerries brought the bands out to greet us on the way. Showed us the sights and gave us tea, We all sang songs, the beer was free To welcome D-Day Dodgers to sunny Italy. Naples and Cassino were taken in our stride, We didn't go to fight there, we went just for the ride. Anzio and Sangro were just names, We only went to look for dames The artful D-Day Dodgers, way out in Italy. Dear Lady Astor, you think you're mighty hot, Standing on the platform, talking tommyrot. You're England's sweetheart and her pride We think your mouth's too bleeding wide. We are the D-Day Dodgers, in sunny Italy. Look around the mountains, in the mud and rain, You'll find the scattered crosses, some that have no name. Heartbreak and toil and suffering gone, The boys beneath them slumber on. They are the D-Day Dodgers who stay in Italy. Lady Astor accused the British forces in Italy of being "D-Day Dodgers" No.9 [ 26. November 2003, 01:50 PM: Message edited by: No.9 ]
No. 9, My old man's one of 'em. Still gets hot under the collar at Astor's name! I meant to add: in the 70's, there was a 90 part work called the War Papers which reprinted WW2 British newspapers, along with propaganda posters from all the nations involved. If I remember, one of the early issues had a feature on service songs: I'll try and rake it out. G'day Friedrich Got a few site's for Canteen songs from WWI and WWII. Have a look at http://www.britishsoldier.com http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/Lieder and http://ingeb.org/songs and http://www.squaddiesongs.com I found these on Google just typing the songs name. Have fun Pop
Well done Flash, my dad was there too with the Queen’s Royal Reg. 8th Army. Actually he saw more of Africa than Italy as while in Africa he got seconded to the Intelligence Corps and they hung onto him for quite a while after his Regiment went to Italy. An uncle and cousin also served in Italy, my cousin's still there. Hope you have success finding that paper and I hope it has a good comprehensive list. There’s several songs I can only partly think of and it would be nice fill in the gaps. I think many of the W.W.I songs were resurrected in W.W.II. Long way to Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles being two that spring to mind. No.9
