Hey Snefru, this was a long time in coming but here you go! Here is a page on classes of Japanese submarines...you'll see that the section 3rd from the right is about japanese subs with aircraft.
here's the link http://www.combinedfleet.com/ss.htm
I once read about a mission one of these types of submarines had...it was a plan to launch a few seaplanes from carrier subs and drop incendiaries into the redwood forests and thus cause forest fires in the park. It was basically designed to hurt US moral. During the carrying out of the mission only one seaplane was able to launch...it dropped it's incendiaries but they failed to create any significant fires. The plane was recovered and they returned to port...I'm sure these types of subs were used for other missions but this was the only one i know of...hope that helps!

No, my dear Ron. The Japanesse sub carriers were going to be used to strike the Panama channel to stop the Amerikan ships going so fast into the Pacific... within days before the beginning of the missions they were ordered to return to Japan to be used as Kamikazes in Okinawa.

Right now I have no specific information on any of the missions the carrier submarines might have performed. I know that there were more than just the I400 class, though. These were the largest of them, and there were numerous other, earlier, classes.
