The California State Military Museum: California and the Second World War: The Shelling of Ellwood

Kozo Nishino visted the Ellwood oil refinery in the 1930s as the captain of a Japanese oil tanker. On February 23, 1942, Kozo Nishino, commander of the Japanese submarine I-17, returned to the Ellwood oil refinery to attack it.

That appears to have been pretty lousy gunnery! They couldn't hit the proverbial elephant and took 20 minutes to shoot 16 shells. I assume the sea state was rather choppy [img]tongue.gif[/img]
