Default Marshall Islands EOD

A little military history about the Islands can be found here.

Today, the islands are littered with unexploded ordnance.

Spot the grenade? Click image for full size.

Japanese bunker destroyed by US Navy shelling.

Japanese 50mm knee mortar round. The markings indicate it's a type or model 88 fuse.

.50 cal linked ammunition - corroded but still hazardous.

USMC dog tag. Official records indicate the Marine who owned the tag fought on the Marshall Islands, but was later killed on Saipan.

Typical example of the UXO on the Marshalls.

Arisaka 6.5 X 50 mm round.

Only one way to dispose of this type of matériel.

Full album here.

I'm sure if you had a metal detector the thing would "beep" constantly in major battle/supply areas.
Places like Tarawa where the Navy's rounds went off half the time is most probably loaded with explosives, of a heavy caliber, buried deep beneath the surface.
Not to mention garrison islands like Guadalcanal, Rabul, Truk, Yap, New Guinea, Iwo, Okinawa, Peleliu, Wake, Saipan and underwater as well.
EOD has there work cut out for them.
Europe/Mediterranean/Africa/Asia(s)/Nesia(s) after both 1 & 2 needed Brass b_lls to pull a plow or run a tractor over those grounds.... even today.

Duds are an interesting subject.
When is a dud a dud ? If it doesn't go off when the launcher wants it to or ever ?
The categories are almost endless, and no doubt separated so no true number/% can be determined ...
Torpedoes
Bombs
Artillery
Mortars
Grenades
mines
Smaller mm 20/25/30/40
I guess it's something no one really wants to remember/talk about/clean up. Just turn the place into a cow pasture/fish farm and it's taken care of.
I've heard as much as 30% in sand/marshes, and early American torpedo's litter the ocean floor. Early VTs were also prone to malfunction as well as late German arty.
