This is the first photo taken from a periscope from an American ww2 submarine.

I was just watching a documentary on submarines and they showed this picture, (I would display it here but the guy on the website below is selling it.)
"The USS Nordilisk(spelling?) on June 26th 1942 tracked and torpedoed the Japanese Destroyer Yamakasi"

Yep as OP says,
USS Nautilus (W. H. Brockman Commanding).
After attempting to finish off the Soryu (towards the end of the battle)(results inconclusive/debatable), she went back to Midway to refuel. Off again in the direction on Tokyo to find Yamakaze.
Results shown.

There is a picture at Nihon Kaigun of the carrier Unryu being sunk as well.

The date would have 6/26 if in fact West of the International Date line, the Eastern recorded Date may have been 6/25.
Just a thought.
