Off the top of my head, the MP-40 was made from 1940-1945. The later ones are of better quality, as they have a slightly different bolt and firing pin that wore better. Initially, the Germans designed them to only last about a year. That is why so many copies were made.
They were manufactured in Austria, but the name of the company escapes me. The original-spec ones were NOT manufactured overseas, but the Soviets did make them as did East Germany thru 1960. There are even updated bolts/recievers that you can buy today. Hope this helps.

The original MP40 model was actually called the MP38, like its' name indicates was accepted into German service in 1938. There were three main manufacturers' for the MP38. They were; Erma, Steyr, and Haenel. The Haenel factory was run by Hugo Schmeisser, and they produced the majority of the weapons which became commanly known as "the Schmeisser". All the gun makers' were assigned letter codes. This was to confuse the Allies so that they didn't know who was making all these machine pistols. Erma was code "27" and later "ayf". Steyr was code "660" and later "bnz". Haenel was code "122" and later "fxo". Later in the war (after 1940) subcontractors were assigned to make the MP40 these were the following;
Krupp- "cos"
Merz- "cnd"
steyr- "kur"

By the end of the war the total production of the MP38 MP40 and MP41, MP40/1, and MP40/2 was 1,025,191!!

Hope this information helps you out. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

Matt

Hi Matt,

Danke for the useful information...so now I know the purpose of them letters... =-p

I would like to know if you have or know anyone who has a MP-40 front sight for sale, well, mine is a Marushin airsoft MP-40...but it's sized and function like the real thing so I was thinking if an Original front sight can fit on it...

Regards

I do know someone who has a front sight, but it is attached to an MP41!!!

I don't know anyone who has a front sight available, but if I didn't it would probably cost more than your gun is worth! I don't think it would be worth the trouble . Try looking at used parts kits (dummy guns)
