You'll think I'm BS'ing here, Bish - but I took my Dad to the RAF Museum at Hendon this afternoon and we stood looking at - Black 6 !
It's just gone back on show in immaculate condition after crashing at a Duxford airshow in 1998. After that, the MOD ( who own it ) said - no more flying !
Presently in the UK there are no airworthy Bf109's or Hispano Buchons. But, in very good static condition, we have ex-Battle of Britain Bf109-Es at Hendon and Duxford as well as Me109G 'Black 6'.

I understand why they don't want them flying, but that is where they belong. Its just a pity they did not think of that in 45 before they turned them all to scrape.
If i lived that close, the wife would never get me out the place.
Thats why i'd love a posting to Bovington.

What's worse-is when I look at pics like that, I find myself saying I would do this, I would take that, and then I can't help but think why would they just let beautiful machines like these go to rack and ruin???? So sad!!!

Because there are not plenty of wise people there who can appreciate the good things of life as we do! And because not many people have so much money to repair and fix the machines, so we could see them flying again...

Remember though what they meant during the war to Allied troops. Tyranny with a capital T ! After the war the only interesting prospects were the jets and the experimental a/c and plans found that pursued the swept or forward wing movements. Now this was of course something totally unheard of to the Allies.....so what a find they had if they could beat out the Soviets to those secret facilities.

Good point Erich. I wonder if all of those were shot down by Mustangs?....
