I think that the Stuka was a pretty good plane too.

But my favourite is the Me262.

Martin, just once, please. Unless you would like to vote for the P-51 a couple of times too.

The Ju.88 isn't there because I think that it was more of a bomber/dive bomber than a fighter.

Redcoat, B-1-Rd = bird. A fighter plane in this case.

Otto, is the Ta-152 your favorite? Or is it just the one that you would put your money on?

Good question, details are everything.

My favourite aircraft of all is the Ju87 Stuka, but it wasn't on your list as it's not a fighter. My favourite fighter is the Ta152 and it's the one I'd put my money on as well.

What? P-51 in the lead by two votes? Come on guys, more votes!!

Anyway, the Me 262 is my choice as the "arrow to the future". Things like Galland said " like an angel pushing the plane " and "give me 300 Me 262´s and we´ll drop 200 B-17´s any day" cannot go without an effect at least on me.
As well many pilots have said that with Me 262 you always had the choice whether to fight or not, and it depended on you, thanx to the speed advantage.
AND it is a very beautiful plane as well!

Aaaahhh, there's nothing like the smell of a jet exhaust!!

Give me a 262 any day.

22 Me262 pilots became aces. Oberst Heinz Bar's 16 kills have yet to be surpassed by any jet flier...

The Me262 was designed for shooting down bombers. The 4x30 mm Mk108 cannon were low-velocity weapons with a low rate of fire, you had to get close to hit with it unless you're shooting at a huge target like the B-17. For shooting at fast-moving, agile fighters the Mk108 is not ideal, OK one hit will blow a P-51's wing off but the low muzzle velocity hinders accuracy.

The best fighter is one that can shoot down bombers and still hold its own in a dogfight against the best fighter the enemy can put up against it.

Sure the Me262 can outrun the P-51 any day of the week. But outfight it? No. The 262 is no dogfighter, it was fast but had a very slow rate of acceleration - that's why it was a sitting duck taking off. Roll wasn't great either. Put it in a tight turn and it bleeds off speed very quickly indeed. Change the throttle setting too rapidly and the engines flame out. A one-shot pass at an enemy fighter is all you get with the 262.

Put the Me262 up against Allied jet fighters like the Gloster Meteor F.III and the Lockheed P-80A, and the 262 would have been outclassed - both Allied jets were faster and more maneuverable than the 262. The Allies didn't push through their jet programs very urgently, as they were winning the war with Spitfires and P-51s and didn't think they'd need the jets.

Lt. Alfred Schreiber 1./JG 7 had 5 kills
Oblt. Fritz Stehle 2./JG 7 had at least 11 kills
Lt. Rudi Rademacher had 12 not 8 kills as published.

Erich, wouldn't most of those kills have been against bombers? Which is good considering that the P-51 was supposed to protect the bombers.....

Remember this is not an arguement this is just which one is your personal favorite.

By the way.....the P-51 accounted for 48.9% of all damage inflicted on the enemy by a B-1-Rd, not a bomber, in Europe!

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that those stats are right.

Mustang, it is almost 50/50 with these pilots. The attack on the P-51 was usually from slightly above and without warning. Attacking bombers started about 1000 feet higher from the rear and then diving down with a porpoise motion so they would come just bleow the tail and fire and then soom through the bomber formation. Of course if they had rockets they usually tried to fire while almost line abreast on the tails of the bombers some 1000 yards plus distant......no argument, just pointing out some facts......

My favorite birds are:
My fav American bird is the P-51 Mustang--then my fav German bird is the ME-109. Sorry--I HAD to choose two aircraft.

Aw heck--ill choose more. My fav British bird is the Hawker Hurricane closely followed by the Spitfire MK-4.
