Indeed, this was the first pic of Rommel with an overseas cap that I had seen as well so I put it here even if the pic is a bit small.

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (center) discusses the upcoming Allied invasion of France with Colonel General Johannes Blaskowitz, commander of Army Group G, and Field Marshall Gerd von Rundstedt.

By the way, anyone got a decent pic of the "Mammoth", Rommels armored car in Africa?

Thanks for the pic of Rommels FM Baton--it sure is a beautiful work of art. As the Russians have it--no doubt it will ever be seen elsewhere again. It NEEDS to be back in Germany where it belongs.

Thanks for the links for the other artifacts like: that Afrika Korps Canteen, Montys' beret and mini medal bar etc.

Back to Rommels Baton. That piece of history is totally priceless. The only thing I can think of that can come close to comparing values with are Hitlers last will and testament, Wolfgang Luths first and spare set of Oak Leaves and Swords (and I know where they permanently reside), Erich Topps Honor Dagger presented to him by Admirals Erich Raeder and Karl Donitz (which was stolen from his home a few years ago by thieves posing as a news crew) , and Der Blucher Stern. Oh and Erich Hartmanns RK, Oaks, Swords and Diamonds that he threw into a river before surrendering to the Russians, as well as Rudels RK, Oaks, Swords, Diamonds and Golden Oaks, Swords and Diamonds. As far as I know--his family still has them

Cool

Didn't Rommel hate that batton, and only use it once for a photograph?

I dont know.

I do know that he didnt have more preferance with anything that had a swaz on it. Notice in the vast majority of photographs that Rommel always tries to have his Pour le Merite overlapping his Knights Cross....

Actually, very few of the field marshals used that fancy and heavy batton. They used a much simpler version (which looks simpler than just a batton). Rommel was not the only one. And that he didn't like anything with Swatikas is not a valid arguement. We all know that if he was not a nazi he was well convinced of Hitler's power and leadership at least until 1942... There were some field marshals who simply could not stand the "Bohemian corporal"... Rommel was one of the 'yes' men in the beginning... And that doesn't make him a nazi.

I think that a realy good commander was Jimmy Dolittle. He led the attacks on Japan right after Pearl. Then he recived command of the Eighth Airforce in England. He flew most of the bombing missions in B-17's with his men.

James Doolitle did not fly missions in B-17s like the rest of his men. Not even squadron commanders did that!

Fried,

I have to correct you on that one. They did. Certainly Squadron commanders. Many indeed choose difficult missions to lead their men, to get their missions in and also show they were up to the job. A crucial part of leadership.

Lt.Col. Bowman, XCO of the 447th died on Jan. 11, 1944, leading his BG to Braunschweig. The 94th that day was lead by their CO, Col. Thorup. Many more examples here.

A famous example is the actor Jimmy Stewart. He was a B24 squadron commander and was known to choose to lead his squadron on the most difficult missions.

I am not sure about the Division Commanders and up, though. Wings were lead by a certain BG, and beging the lead BG often meant the CO would fly.

Yes, Stevin. I knew that a few men did fly with their men as many German division commanders were always in battle. However, it was not the most common, was it? Even if so, we are talking about squadron commanders. But can you imagine the General Staff alowing general Doolittle to fly in a B-17 in a raid to Berlin? The commander of an Air Force?!
