Who is your favorite commander of WWII? He doesn't have to be a General or anything, just your favorite soldier, seaman, or airman.
Perhaps we should break it down by country, or maybe I'll post a poll with some of the more famous ones? But for now, try and list some uncommon commanders that achieved greatness!

My favorite commander and the only general hero is Herr Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, murdered by Mr Hitler & co

I've just read a really good essay on Brigadier Alexander Stanier in Sheffield's book "Leadership and Command - The Anglo-American Military Experience since 1861".
Stanier was a pretty average Brig who was tasked to command a Brigade on D-Day. He was quite surprised at this as he felt he was rather old and had not passed staff college. He was in fact given a highly educated Brigade Major so Stanier in effect left the BM at HQ and roved among his units to try and solve problems and offer advice - never staying too long or undermining the local commander's authority.
As a case study in effective leadership it is well worth reading. There are people like this far worthier of our admiration than the Rommels, Rundstedts, Pattons or Monty's. If only we knew more about them.

Not surprising but--most Historians and most General Officers in ww2 feel that Erich von Manstein von Lewinsky was the best commander in ww2.
Hard for me to pick as I like Manstein and Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel both equally.

It is very good to have this thread alive again!
And all what I read is Erwin Rommel, Erwin Rommel, Erwin Rommel... I won't say a thing about the man because this thread is for your FAVOURITES commanders, not the best... Because if we were talking about the best, then Von Manstein surely beats everybody.

OK, these are personal 'favourites' - faults and all :
Guy Gibson ( surprise ! )
Johnny Frost ( Airborne )
Jim Gavin ( US Airborne )
Brian Horrocks ( Corps Commander )
Jochen Peiper in the Ardennes ( ruthless but fascinating )
'Sailor' Malan ( Battle of Britain )

my personally favourite is someone who is never given the amount of credit he deserve, along with his army, and that is Lietenant General William 'Bill' Slim. This man was arguably britians greatest general of WW2.

I have to admit that I know very little about Slim - I keep meaning to buy a copy of his book about the XIV Army.

Yeah unfortuanatly this theatre of war recieves very little in the way of academic research, it is passed over for the much more 'glamorous' pacific. Slim and the 14th army is hopefully what i am going to write my university dissertation on, i just need to find the information .

Rommel was a General with great tactical skills. Still my favorites are the 2 most influental strategists of WWII:
Zhukov & Manstein

Of course you're right, Knight! Rommel was an awesome tactician, but your two favourites were complete strategists! By the way: welcome to the forums!!!
