I whent to a gun show and aquiered a 7.92x33mm round that was unusual in that it had a tomback jacketed bullet. It was made in january 1945. I'll have to find it to get the factory code. It also hada zinc primmer cup (probably due to a weary war economy) and a blue ring around the primer which means it's a S.m.E. round or Spitzgeschoss mit Eisenkern or pointed bullet with iron core. I have only seen rounds with copper or copper plated jackets but never one of these. Why was it made this way? To lengthen barrel life? Also any ideas on it's value? Please email me at wipvi@attbi.com

Question

Have you got a copy of Senich's 'The German Assault Rifle 1935-1945'?

According to this ( p.177 ) :-
'Bullets were normally ''Tombak plated''; Cupronickel saw limited use as well. Referenced bt the Germans as Tombak Plattiertem Stahlmantel ( Tombak Plated Steel Jacket ) an alloy of copper and steel....'

Also ( p.182 ) :-
'Although blue, black, green and red primer annulus colors will be noted on Kurz cartridges, the various colors were apparently used without any particular significance. Later standardized, a Polte blueprint gives October 1944 as general adoption of the blue primer annulus, the most common of those mentioned'.

Don't know if any of this helps you....

this dose help very much thank you. THe bullet is silver color and therefor must be coupero-nickle. I am confused over the definition of tombak because I've heard it as coper color and as nickel color. I'm wrighting a book on ammunition of wwii would you be interested in seeing the german and american stuff I have so far?

Email me if so.

Question

About the Cupro-Nickel, Senich says ; -

'Cupronickel Plattiertem Stahlmantel ( Cupronickel Plated Steel Jacket ). The copper and nickel jacket coatings are more commonly known as Gilding Metal Clad Steel (GMCS) and Cupronickel Clad Steel (CNCS). From the two types, however, except for some 'dou' and late 'aux' production, the GMCS served as the standard finish'.

( Senich, p.177 )
