Assuming a P-51D versus a Spitfire XIV (griffon engined variants) the Spitfire is likely the better dogfighter and would win. Against a P-51H it would be a closer contest but I would still put odds on the Spitfire.
Of course, if both had to fly 450 miles to the combat site first.......

The Spitfire XVI came into service at about the same time as the P-51D, so how about between these two

Greenjacket is an unknown quantity at this point

Assuming a pure dogfight where range is not a concern, my money goes on the Spitfire XIV - superior climb, speed, turning circle, firepower and stall characteristics, and a slight edge in service ceiling.

However, the P-51D has a huge advantage in range of course, and a slight advantage in pilot visibility.

[EDIT - I'm using a Mk XIV as I'm most familiar with it, but the performance of the XVI was marginally superior to the XIV IIRC.]
