Good point, Alpha - the Comet (A34) Tank was the first British AFV design of WWII to come close to matching the Panther.
But, like so many other weapons, it appeared just too late to make any difference at all. First production models appeared in September 1944 and the first to enter service were issued to the 11th Armoured Division following the Rhine Crossing in April 1945. Apparently a few trial tanks were issued the previous December but I'm not sure if they saw any action.
