Good point, Alpha - the Comet (A34) Tank was the first British AFV design of WWII to come close to matching the Panther.

But, like so many other weapons, it appeared just too late to make any difference at all. First production models appeared in September 1944 and the first to enter service were issued to the 11th Armoured Division following the Rhine Crossing in April 1945. Apparently a few trial tanks were issued the previous December but I'm not sure if they saw any action.

I believe that the 29th Armored Brigade received the first Comets before the Ardennes Offensive, but they quickly turned them back in and mounted up in their Shermans and Fireflies to help turn back the 2nd Panzer Division when it was approaching the Meuse.

Anyway, it was a good tank, just too late to be anything but an object of academic interest. Like it or not, the Western Allies won the war in the Sherman.
