Air defence of the C-47???

The Ju-52, in delivery of Fallschirmjaggers, had for defence at least one dorsal mounted MG with provisions for "beam mounted" weapons as well and even a dorsal turret mounted toward the front of the aircraft (unsure if this was used in the deployment of paratroopers). NOW - drawings of the C-47 show that the fuelsalage windows were fitted with grommets to accomadate small arms...was this for aircraft defence? Has anyone ever heard of this to any extent?

C-47 used in asia during WWII ...in Burma etc ... had mountings for .30 cal's for air defence ....during cargo runs ...if I rememebr correctly ....ive even seen quite a few pics ...of Chindits manning guns in a C-47
