A new article on my website about a very rare 1930s AA gun and its ammunition.

Tony,
Have you any info. on these being shore mounted for ack ack defence? A colleague speculated a while back that an RNAD in Fife had some of these mounted inside the base, as well as Bofors guns on a metalled track around the outside of the perimeter.
Wishful thinking or not?

I'd be fascinated if they were, but I have no information about it. Is there a trail to be picked up here?
I know that the Vickers archives are now in the care of the library of the University of Cambridge. Unfortunately it's a long way from where I live.

Question? Is this the (quad)1.1 naval gun used by U.S. on ships in the early days of the war? Hornet/Enterprise/Lexington/Saratoga/Yorktown/Wasp/Ranger?
If so, I always wondered where that size came from. I know the Japanese used a 25mm. Is this a "copy" of that weapon to?

Neither.
The USN 1.1 inch (28x199SR ammo) owed nothing to any other gun. The Japanese 25mm Type 96 (25x163) was a licensed copy of the French Hotchkiss, which also owed nothing to the Vickers or the USN gun.
You can compare all three ammo types in the Ammo Photo Gallery on my website.

Why U.S. 1.1 then? Is this like a treaty restriction (or something) on anti-aircraft size?Isn't the object to captue and use enemy munitions? Why so close, but yet so far? If I may ask?

At the time the 1.1 inch was designed there was an old international agreement that explosive shells should weigh at least 400g (it was adopted in the 19th century to prevent explosive bullets from being used against people). In practice, this was abandoned in WW1 and no-one else took any notice of it thereafter, but it was still technically still in force. The 1.1 inch shell weighs just 416g.
