Hi there,
Does anyone know if the Sten MkIIs was issued to any British units in WWII (if so, which ones?), or was it mainly used by SOE and the resistance?
Cheers,
Rob.

The silenced models were produced at the request of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) for use by their teams in occupied Europe and dropped to resistance groups towards the end of WWII.

I'd have been interested to know myself....
The silenced Sten is almost legendary but in all my reading of WWII I've never come across reference to the weapon being used by combat forces. Vague references are made to it being 'dropped into Occupied Europe' and 'produced in large numbers' but as to specifics - I can find nothing.

The MKII was the most produced Sten variant with over 2 million.
The silenced version was issued to commando units, "who used it extensively".

Theredbaron, do you have a source for that?
I am looking to create a WWII British impression for reenactment, based around the MkII-S I have, and didnt want to do SOE. I wanted to do a more mainstream unit, such as the commandos, but couldnt find any reference to them using the weapon.

Comes from 'British Army Handbook' by George Forty.
Will check a few other sources if you want... I think I may have a photo of a commando with a silenced sten...

I believe a Sten was given to Czheck (pardon my spelling) Forces for the assasination of Renihard Heydrich - SS Obergruppenfuhrer. But the weapon failed to fire and he got a modified anti tank grenade thrown at him.
