The Messerschmitt Me109H.

At the beginning of 1943, workwas proceeding on the development of a dedicated high-altitude fighter based on the Me109F.
Designated Me109H, this was essentially a Me109F airframe with a higher-rated DB 601 engine and a parallel-chord centre section inserted in the wing, increasing overall span to 39 ft 1,1/4 in (11.92 m).
A demand for improved service ceiling resulted in the decision to adopt the DB 628A engine, which, with an induction cooler and two-stage mechanical super-charger, promised 1.580 hp at 6.560 ft (2.000 m).

a friend of mine has a book with closeup 109 tail photos. they all looked flat as a board except for hinge screws. So much for Carson's 109 comments.
