The US Army decided in February 1941 that it should have airborne forces with armor support. General Motors, Christie, and Marmon-Herrington were asked to submit designs in May 1941.

500 were ordered in April 1942 before service tests had begun. Eventually 1,900 were ordered but due to design changes and manufacturing problems only 830 were delivered.

No suitable glider or aircraft to transport it was found.

That's why a number was given to the Brits, who carried them in Hamilcar gliders.

Well, it was better than the Brit's own Tetrarch. They gave a bunch of those to the Soviets for Lend-Lease. Even have a photo somewhere of the little things charging forward carrying tankii desant infantry and being led by a T-34.

Tetrach was ok, if used correctly...

...i.e. as a paperweight.

Always liked the look of the locust though, probably not a particularly effective tank but it'd create a headache for infantry I'd imagine.

I suppose the gent in the preserved vehicle in the photo above is 2/3 outside the tank because he can't very obviously fit inside

Good site on the Belgian army museum's Locust restoration
(The one that recently took part in 'Tanks In Town' in Mons, really must visit that one year.):

Locust_Page.

Cheers,
Adam.
