I was about to say excellent choices then I saw the Do-335...why? Far better planes in the Luftwaffe than a project that hardly saw combat.

Re: Pick your Airforce
Fighter (long range escort and air superiority): P51 (Merlin engined)
Fighter (FB and interceptor): Fw 190 (BMW 801 variant, no liquid cooled engines for ground attack please, P-47 would be second choice but not flexible enough armament wise, I want 30mm guns to deal with heavy bombers.
Trainer: Tiger Moth (T-6 Texan as second choice)
Transport: SM 82, (I wanted at least one Italian plane and the SM 82 was good)
Jack of all trades, light bomber, night fighter, long range naval patrol fighter, strategic recon, pecision bomber, you name it it does it: Petlyakov Pe-2 (the Mosquito was my original choice with Ju 88 as third but I like the dive bombing capability and the Mossie never had dive brakes).
Medium bomber B-25 (really hard one this, lots of serviceable designs no outstanding ones)
Long range marittime patrol Kawanishi H8K1 (The B-24/Privateer line comes out a close second but the possibility to refuel at sea for really long range ops carries it)
Light comunications Fi 156 (just love it)
Precision bombing Ju 87 (Yes it's vunerable but when you need to put a big bomb in a small target the Stuka is the plane for it, what I reall want is the A-1 Skyraider but it was a few months late for WW2).
No heavy bombers by design as I'm not a believer in area bombing, having Lancasters just to drop tallboys is tempting but not worth a slot.
Tried to fit in a French, but the more advanced French designs didn't have enough operational use to make the list.
With just 9 choices there's no place for carrier planes, The F4U and SBD would have made the list otherwise.

Re: Pick your Airforce
side notation : the Do 335 as grand as it appeared never saw ANY operational combat. it was test flown only and then parked to be shot up or rotted away and junked.

IIRC an Allied pilot claimed to have shot down a Do 335, if true it did see combat even if it was a test flight. But maybe I'm confusing with Pierre Clostermann's reported failed attempt to catch up with a plane he identified as a Do 335. BTW does anybody know if the episode is in one of his books? I read le grand cirque many years ago but don't remember it.

Everything he said should be taken with a grain of salt. As far as I'm aware it didn't see any combat. Totally stupid plane if you ask me, total waste!

Re: Pick your Airforce
Trainer..A-6 texan
Fighter/high altitude fighter/interceptor: P-51H assumedly could also conduct long range escort missions.
long range escort....P-47N presumedly could also double as ground attack.
trasnsport...C-47
heavy bomber: B-29
medium bomber: P-38L quite capable of carrying large bombloads plus could provide fighter, interceptor, long range fighter, high altitude fighter and ground attack functions. if one must pick a tatical bomber why not the Ju-88 it could also function as dive bomber, torpedo plane and night fighter.
Night fighter...Mosquito...
naval fighter..F6F easy to produce, very rugged, very forgiving on training new pilots, and very, very carrier capable.could also double as ground attack and has very, very good range...F4U-4 right there with it but I wanted at least one fighter that was very easy to produce along with having docile handling charcteristics. Eric Brown considered the Hellcat to be superior to the '109G and quite equal to the '190A . the USN could even had increased it's roll rate enormously along with equipping it with turbo-chargers.
maritime patrol...Privateer /B-24
