I always wondered about the propeller....

Now I read it was the "Seppler screw" which was used to power the generator that delivered the necessary electrical current for the navigational system as long as the airplane was in flight.

Just gotta love those pilots...

"...because of the center of gravity and, to make full use of extra space in the cockpit, the designers had installed fuel tanks ( in the wrong place ) to the left and right of the pilot´s seat. A simple thin sheet of pure aluminium separated my legs from two 60-liter tanks gurgling with T-agent. A small accident on takeoff and you´re sitting in a flesh-dissolving solution...

Some aircraft have an emergency power generator in case of internal power supply failure, consisting of a gravity drop down generator powered by a windmill activated by the slipstream. I tried to find a photo or two but didn't.

In the case of the 163 as it didn't have a "proper" engine, it couldn't have a generator working off said engine, hence the need for a slipstream powered generator.

Some types of bomb fuses are also activated by a small windmill in the nose or in the back but this is a different matter.
