tele tanks
I'm getting intruiged by the use of teleguided tanks in ww2.
What I wonder is did the British forces or the US used any of those tanks?
I know that the russians did (forgot the name of the tank) and also the Germans had they're share of teleguided tanks (the goliath par example)(the battle of kursk).
could you guys give me an update about this?
many thanks arne(ken)

Re: tele tanks
I can't think of any US or British ones off the top of my head.
Quite a thorough page on the wire-guided version of the Goliath:
Light demolition carrier "Goliath"
(Which incidentally comes from a rather nice site on German gear in general, from which I'd only noticed the tracked Kubel article before.)
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: tele tanks
he sure got a nice collection of books I most say.

In the year 1940 a small demolition carrier, which was developed by the french manufacturer Kegresse, was sunk in the Seine and recovered by the germans, who explored it detailed.

In particulary this sentence intruiges me. so the Germans build their Goliath after this French model?

Re: tele tanks
The Russian one was a T-26 packed full of explosives...don't know the official designation. Must have made quite a boom.

Re: tele tanks
A newly acquired book tells of a 'British Goliath' that I'd not noted before.
The 'Beetle' or 'Mobile landmine' (MLM) was an electrically driven remote (wire-guided) device designed by Metropolitan-Vickers in 1940 and envisioned for Demolitions, tank attack & mine clearance.
Only 50 ordered before it was finally deemed unacceptable in late '44.
Combined Operations seem to have adapted it for use in the water, either floating, or moving along the bottom. Another variant was produced with a trip wire arrangement that entangled a tank's tracks before the machine reeled itself into the vehicle and exploded.
I'm having some trouble finding a web-based picture of it, the single (very clear) image in the book is reminiscent of the Goliath but perhaps slightly smaller, with some rather unusual looking tracks.
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: tele tanks
Zero luck finding a web-based image so here's a scan, very peculiar tracks with those inward extensions, though as there's no indication of whether this is a prototype, production, amphibious or other vehicle it's hard to speculate. (Perhaps something to do with keeping such small flat tracks attached while steering?) :
Cheers,
Adam.
