Do French Resistance fighters armed with MP40s or K98s count?

The photo of the germans with the .50 is interesting, not sure why they would want to carry the carbines unless they had nothing else to fight with.

I tend to think the Russians up until the AK-47 which even then was a rip off the the Sturmgewehr 44 had poor weapons, they just had a lot of them is all. But the PPSh-41 was a great sub-machinegun, it had a longer range than it's Axis and Allied counterparts, it packed great firepower, one round in the chest would most likely kill you with its high caliber rounds.
German Wehrmacht soldier using it instead of the MP40.

Got to wade in here to say that arguably the Moisin Nagant was the equal of it's allied counterparts, what it laced in finess it made up for in ease of use and robustness (a friend of mine was having problems with his wartime MN, he was informed they were due to him keeping it too clean).

Incidentally, regarding the AK being a rip off of the MP44 family, again not exactly the case. The mechanism is rather different they just happen to look similar, it was the principle of a rifle firing a short cartridge that was ground breaking and incorporated into the AK.

Agree with Stefan, the Moisin-Nagant was a sturdy, reliable weapon, as was the Maxim. Their pistols left much to be desired, but pistols are generally irrelevant in combat.

Russian small arms in WWII were more than adequate.

I don't know, the tokarev did the job. Also worth keeping in mind the Russian attitude was that officers shouldn't need weapons because they were there to set an example, not to shoot at people.

Pact, I'm fairly certain someone more knowledgeable can come to my ai here but as I understand it the reason for the similarity is roughly this. The MP44 family were designed so as to be fired accurately from a variety of firing positions, the shape of the weapon was thought out so that the force from the recoil would be channelled down the body and spread more evenly than on more traditional rifles. This would allow more accurate shooting in both automatic and repitition. Thus the original design took the butt shape more traditional in SMG's (compare to the thompson for example), with their downward angle as opposed to the straight stock of a bolt action rifle. Klashnikov clearly thought this wasn't a bad idea and imitated it, can't say I blame him.

Kriegfilms

As a British soldier serving in Italy I can only remember one occasion when I had an "un-authorised weapon"

The first entry in my diary reminds me when I found it:

Monday 16th. April 1945
Early morning move. Watched eytie squad burying some tedeschi dead.
Found Jerry rifle & ammo in the wood. Cpl.Boreman fixing the
charging engine.

The second entry reminds me when I got rid of it !

Sunday 22nd. April 1945
Woke to find mortar crew right at my head inyard right in front of
casa. Rations came up with T.R's kit (?). More prisoners. Slung
my 'spare' rifle. Moved into fields.
