Re: Destroyed tanks
Holy Cr_p Joe, that' a Hungarian Turan ! There's only about 3 known pictures of both the I & II, (four now).
You can tell by that "funky" little extra boogie between the flat rollers and the drive sprocket, (I know, so did the Skoda/Praga) and of course the "boxy" cupola.
Cool pic ! Never saw one with apron armor either.

Earl,
Have you sauntered over to WW2Talk and played with Adam and Bod in their name that tank game?

Re: Destroyed tanks
Wait, your first picture, I've seen it before with a caption -
"Destroyed JagdTiger/Tiger II"
Of course, I knew it was an Elephant from the very beginning! And any old fool can see it's not a Tiger II or a JT.
Anyway, I'm sorry PzJgR, but this has to be done.

A Hetzer

Well thats enough for today.

Re: Destroyed tanks
Looks like a little give & take there since StuG "6" has T-34 track on it's upper chassis, and in the front rack for extra protection. I doubt the Russians gave it to them.
Not to mention the gorgeous job of "cement" application.

Re: Destroyed tanks
many of these vehicles have gone through by their own crews with a little self destruct gents, not the wishful thinking of a Allied/Soviet round

My guess with the Panther is that it's brewed up earlier and at least one 'set' of penetrations are due to troops passing later & putting a few rounds in 'just to be sure' as was apparently common (& sensible to my mind) practice. That Jagdpanther at the IWM has the most astonishlingly close grouping of hits that were taken in battle so it's possible several went in so close together.
As so many German wrecks are now so well documented hopefully someone will come along who knows where that one met it's end.
That bulldozed over tiger must be one of the most heavily used shots of the entire war. IWM's caption for it:
Quote:
WRECKED GERMAN TRANSPORT MARKS THE RETREAT FROM ROME, 18 JUNE 1944
A German Tiger tank on its side in a ditch, north of Rome, and an American lorry in the background driving past

Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Destroyed tanks
"just to be sure", I believe the Americans called it "is anyone home?", same thing, only different.
Common practice to shoot up a wreck. Also common (for troops (Americans+) with lots of ammo and not real sure of the ability of their guns) to shoot three times, (at the same target) no matter what. At least my Uncle told this story.
There are many holes in that thing boggies, apron armor, lower hull, even the mantlet, and that's just the starboard side.
I have the book Images of Kursk, one of my "Fav's".

Re: Destroyed tanks
It was not uncommon for enemy soldiers to use damage tanks as hidey holes where they would wait in ambush for patrols. It was always good policy to discourage this practice. There were even cases where damaged tanks could still use their main gun for a suicide shot or two.

Re: Destroyed tanks
I seem to remember reading about a M3 Grant, knocked out in the desert. The 75mm Loader and Gunner stayed behind while the rest of the crew retreated back behind British Lines. I forget what happens next, but the Tank kept firing for a while though.

Re: Destroyed tanks
Cool pictures. This reminds me of a German tank cemetery in May 1945. I'll scan the pictures and post it for you later today. I'd love some identification too because tanks are not my speciality. There are some aircrafts on this pic too!

Re: Destroyed tanks
That Sherman "Cairo".......I've never seen wooden planks mounted to any tank before.Would this be as good or better than the German "Schuerzen" metal skirts?
