What was the original purpose intended for the Panzer I (Panzerkampfwagen I)?

It was 'a tank', as the distinctions above are not ones the Germans drew (except perhaps 'training').

It certainly wasn't an MBT as that concept was a long way from consideration when the Mark 1's design was laid down. The Tiger can perhaps be cited as the first attempt to formulate an MBT that truly could dominate a battlefield but I feel that it was only achieved as a rounded concept postwar.
