Default A question on Luftwaffe prop markings...

Ok, I searched for this and couldn't find the answer so I'll ask it here: (Forgive if this has already been answered in the past.)

Several german fighter and bomber aircraft used a swirly pattern on their prop housings during the war. What was the significance of this? Was it simply an aesthetic thing or was it something more?

This is what I'm asking about:

simple it was an ID marking to take overall effect in the LW fighter units as of July 1944, though there were variations and in fact many fighter twin and single engine crews had the spiral removed

I always heard them called "shock spinners".

Your aircraft seems to be missing a prop by the way.

It's a flying model, it has a two blade prop on an electrical motor. A particularly good looking model, about 90-120cm span.

Forgive my incessant nagging...but an ID marking in what sense? Did they intend to id other german aircraft in the air by the spiral markers on their noses?

Perhaps they thought some allied pilots looking back at the german on their tail wold be freaked out by the spinning graphic coming towards them with guns blazing?

That isn't my plane BTW, just a picture I "borrowed" for the sake of asking the question.
