You might want to be a lttle more specific. What "Gun"? Do you mean Artillary,Tank, Anti-aircraft,Naval? Or do you mean infantry weapon? Pistol, rifle, carbine, machinegun, submachinegun,Ect? If you check the forum there are a few other threads on the subject.

whatever category, the famous "88" has to be a contender for best gun of WW2. Name a weapon the allies had that could touch it? 17pdr possibly.
M36 Jackson 90mm. All to late in the war to make a difference.

Regardless if they were too late in the war doesnt make them any less qualified to be the "Best".

the 88 was available right from the start so made a massive difference-north africa hellfire pass for example. not sure when 17pdr in service, dec. '44? german panzerwaffe a spent force by then. no targets for an otherwise fine weapon.

Is longevity part or use in service an indication of being the "Best" or "better" weapon? The 25 pounder or the Browning M2 .50 .cal have been around for decades. Are they the "best" in thier catagories?

Or the Colt M1911 in the ".45 Automatic Pistols" class. Or the US Naval 16" gun in the Large Naval Guns class.

In short, the question made is pointless as it is not specific enough

Regarding the 88 or 90 question, the long 88 was better hands down. Not even the Super 90 the Americans would field in the super pershing with separate loading was able to score penetrations as the long 88...

In the MGs cathegory, the M2 and the MG42 are big contenders (both still used nowadays)...

In pistols, the 1911 obviously also the tokarev as it was reliable and hardy...

In SMGs there are many contenders but the last ones are probably the Owen, the Bereta 38A and the ZK 383...

Artillerie... well, there are a lot of contenders here a a lot of classes... Anything that could be shot and landed more or less on the target with a large enough warhead was good enough I guess... Being the Russian 152mm or the Germans 15cm or the British 25pdr or the americans 155mm... Not to mention mortars and close assault guns!

Oh we stil got naval guns, aircraft guns rifles (tough the best assault rifle is the Stg44)... So many we could create a thread to debate each and every one of them...

EDIT: Oh I think the best gun would be one who did the best job at the best cost!

Cheers...

Sure it was good... But the Owen the Beretta and the ZK 383 were better... better accuracy and control hands down... the ZK had a mode of using it like a LMG (or in the case, a very light MG - VLMG) the Germans got their hands on all they could and asked for more

Cheers...

I'm going to head this thread off at the pass before it gets out of hand as it surely will do.

Ron Brock, please be more specific with what type of weapon you are inquiring about. A "gun" can be anything from at 283mm Krupp K5 to the piece of crap Liberty pistol.
