Default Does anyone know what this is?

My neighbor has this in his garage.
He believes it was used to start aircraft in World War 2.
If so which aircraft?
What is it called?
Is worth anything?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That looks quite a bit like a stationary power plant for small agricultural application. Note the PTO which is a flat belt drive. These were used to power circular blade saws, grain cleaners, straw choppers, and stuff like that on my Dad's place in Montana. That looks to be a two cylinder version, his was a single cylinder with a huge fly-wheel on the oposite (hand crank) side from the PTO (power take off).

Just a guess, since I don't see how it could be used to start aircraft, either inline or radial. Not with that flat belt PTO.

That would be my guess. A small belt drive motor for agriculturial or industrial use.

If you give it a quick one over you might find the make and model of the unit, then take that and go online and search out the maker site, and whether or not they were bought out or absorbed by another company. That should let you use the model # to find the production run years.

There is a a quite extensive batch of stuff like that on the net these days due to the interest of collecting such "antique" power units.

Good luck!
